Graduate (M.A.) program

The Political Science Department offers different study tracks for graduate studies, and for each program there are different admissions requirements.

Each track may be taken as a research track (including a thesis submission) or a non-research track:

General M.A. - research and non-research track

Specialization in Democracy and Politics in Israel

Specialization in International Relations

Program for Advanced Studies (Telem)- integrated MA and PhD program

General M.A.

This study track is intended for students wishing to leave their study options as open as possible, allowing them to focus on areas that may not belong to the specific specialization tracks (for example, political thought). The general M.A. track is intended for both the research and non-research paths. Studies without specialization include general required courses (depending on the choice of path of study, research/non-research) and elective coursework, making up 36 course credits. General M.A. track students are welcome to receive advice from the department's M.A. advisor.

Specialization in Democracy and Politics in Israel

Head of Specialty: Professor Eitan Alimi

The main rational behind this specialization is the combination of the uniqueness of the Political Science Department at Hebrew University - located in Jerusalem at the center of government and politics in Israel, adjacent to areas of relevance to research combining the political and practical arenas of the department faculty - and the desire of our students to learn and understand, in depth and in practice, the characteristics, dynamics and processes of Israeli politics and democracy. Accordingly, the studies in this specialization will explore subjects which apply to democracy and politics, in Israel and more broadly, empirically, theoretically and normatively. The main goal is to provide students with integrated distinct knowledge and understanding of these fields. The many specialties and expertise of the department in the aspects of democracy and politics in Israel ensure a diverse and unique program with high standards. The combination between democracy and politics in Israel is designed to provide a deep understanding of the essence of democracy and the ability to examine strengths and weaknesses in its implementation in the case of Israel.

Specialization in International Relations

Head of the specialty: Professor Oren Barak

This specialty focuses on the areas where International Relations and Political Science overlap.  The goal  is to enable students interested in cases dealing in the overlap between the international arena and the arena of state, or in matters which touch upon the international arena of politics more broadly, to combine core and elective courses from the Department of International Relations in their studies. This specialization is based on the disciplinary proximity between the departments, allowing advanced political science students to strengthen their acquaintance with theories and methods from the field of International Relations. This track enables students in the research track specifically to acquaint themselves with the research in the field of International Relations. In essence, this is the main track for these students, allowing them to formulate research theories and gain tools which can be integrated in both the political and international arenas.
