Gideon Rahat holds the Gersten Family Chair in Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been studying the politics of reform, democratic institutions, political parties, candidate and leadership selection, and political personalization. He is a co-editor of the book series The Elections in Israel since 2015. He was also a co-editor (together with Reuven Hazan, Alan Dowty, and Menachem Hofnung) of The Oxford Handbook of Israeli Politics and Society (2021). He authored several books; From Party Politics to Personalized Politics? Party Change and Political Personalization in Democracies, (together with Ofer Kenig, 2018 Oxford University Press; The Promise and Challenge of Party Primary Elections: A Comparative Perspective (with William Cross, Ofer Kenig, Scott Pruysers, McGill-Queen's University Press, 2016); Democracy Within Parties: Candidate Selection Methods and their Political Consequences (with Reuven Hazan, Oxford University Press, 2010); The Politics of Regime Structure Reform in Democracies: Israel in Comparative and Theoretical Perspective (SUNY, 2008). In addition, he published numerous articles in refereed academic journals, chapters in edited books, handbook and encyclopedia entries, and various other publications. He is also a senior fellow at the leading nonpartisan political think tank, the Israel Democracy Institute. As part of his work there, he published several monographs, policy and position papers. Heading a team of 10 researchers, he was the leading editor of the book Reforming Israel's Political System (2013, in Hebrew).
